In response to:
Fear of Flying from the January 14, 1999 issue
To the Editors:
As several readers wrote, my article on aviation [NYR, January 14] misidentified the organization that publishes the annual Nall Report, analyzing the causes of small plane crashes. It is the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (not Airline Owners), usually referred to as AOPA. Also, my reference to the Boeing 707 as the first jet in widespread commercial service should have said “first American jet.” The DeHaviland Comet, a British plane, entered commercial passenger service several years earlier, in 1952.
