To the Editors:
We write to seek your support for a suitable memorial at the London School of Economics for the great scholar and teacher, Leonard Schapiro. Those of us who were his colleagues and students can think of no better way of commemorating his achievement than by establishing a studentship for postgraduates in Russian studies at LSE. It is therefore proposed to set up the Leonard Schapiro Graduate Studentship to enable postgraduates to pursue their studies for an M.Sc. or research degree.
The cost of postgraduate studies these days is high. It would be desirable from time to time to offer a full studentship; but even an award of £1,000 might enable a student from at home or abroad to continue at LSE, in which case the studentship could be shared between two or more candidates. The initial appeal is aimed at attracting £25,000.
Many of Leonard Schapiro’s friends who were able to be present at the Memorial Meeting on 23 January will remember the warm tributes paid to him on that occasion. A text of the addresses is available from Miss Jennifer Pinney, Appeals Officer, London School of Economics, to whom contributions for the Leonard Schapiro Graduate Studentship should also be sent. (Cheques should be made payable to The LSE 1980s Fund.)
