In response to:
The Father of American Black Nationalism from the March 12, 1970 issue
To the Editors:
I was delighted to read Theodore Draper’s excellent review (NYR, March 12) on Martin R. Delany, “the founding father of black nationalism in America.” In this connection, I thought I might make clear that Delany’s Official Report of the Niger Valley Exploring Party (which is quoted several times by Mr. Draper) has been reprinted in full in Search for a Place (also cited by Mr. Draper; University of Michigan Press, $4.95). Search for a Place also includes the more personal journal of a colleague of Delany’s, Robert Campbell, who accompanied Delany on his remarkable pre-Civil War journey to West Africa.
