In response to:
Auden Above the Snow Line from the January 23, 1964 issue
To the Editors:
In a review (January 23) of Monroe K. Spears’s The Disenchanted Island: The Poetry of W. H. Auden, I wrote that Mr. Spears gave as a purpose of his book correcting misinformation spread by Richard Hoggart’s Auden and by Joseph Warren Beach’s The Making of the Auden Canon. This is indeed what Mr. Spears said but my so unqualified reporting of it seems to mean that both books are quite full of errors. I am sure Mr Spears would agree that the misinformation he cites from Mr. Hoggart is a minor matter. Mr. Hoggart’s Auden is a good book and so is Beach’s. Incidental and slighting references are a nuisance and I am sorry to have put into print two at once.
