Living in the Breach from the February 17, 1983 issue
To the Editors:
In his review of The Second Life of Art: Selected Essays of Eugenio Montale [NYR, February 17], Sven Birkerts suggests that Dino Campana has never been translated. He has been however by I.L. Salomon. Under the title Orphic Songs, a selection of Campana’s work was issued in a bilingual edition in 1968 by October House. It includes poems from Canti Orfici as well as a few from those that turned up after Campana’s death in 1932. In his introduction Saloman tells a little of Campana’s tortured existence and of his difficult publishing history.
