In response to:
Betrayal in France from the August 12, 1993 issue
In my review of Susan Zuccotti’s book The Holocaust, the French, and the Jews [NYR, August 12], I wrote that in 1939 Jews represented about 8 percent of the French population. As a gratifyingly large number of readers have noted, this should of course have read 0.8 percent. In the years before World War Two there was indeed much worried discussion in France about the country’s demographic stagnation: but the population had not yet fallen to a mere four million souls! I apologize for the migrant decimal point.
