To the Editors:
Your readers may be interested to know that the fifth Jonathan Lieberson Memorial Prize in Philosophy has been awarded to Christian Barry for his essay, “The Very Idea of a Redistributive Scheme.” Susan Hahn received honorable mention for her essay, “Value Conflicts and Belief Revision in Hegel’s Phenomenology.” Mr. Barry received his bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and has returned to Columbia to pursue his Ph.D. in Philosophy. The prize of $1,000 is awarded each year for the best essay by a graduate student in the Philosophy Department at Columbia University “showing applicability of moral or scientific theory or both to a social or historical issue.” The award was donated by friends of the late Jonathan Lieberson, who was a contributing editor of The New York Review of Books and the author of Varieties.
