In response to:

Stalingrad, cont'd. from the May 25, 2000 issue

To the Editors:

Jason Epstein, in his parting shot [Letters, NYR, May 25], suggested that my book Stalingrad required “extensive redrafting.” Since then, I have consulted the two leading authorities on the subject and it appears that very little of what I had written needs to be corrected. This naturally may well change if and when the Russian authorities finally decide to open the sections of their Stavka archive dealing with strategic and command decisions. Only then can the debate on the subject of the Eastern Front in 1942, involving both Russian and Western historians, be settled.
