To the Editors:
I am bewildered and concerned as to the unexpected direction in which The New York Review has turned. It is a direction which I cannot be expected to follow.
I am neither a puritan or a prude. I read the John Phillips’ review of Ladislas Farago’s Patton: Ordeal and Triumph with the eye of a former machine-gunner in the 1st Infantry Division. My wife, however, does not enjoy this advantage. I feel that Mr. Phillips’ statement, “and this time Patton had fucked up for fair,” is inexcusable and detestable. Such language expresses nothing and detracts from everything…
