May I play the learned friend whom Mr. Nabokov addresses, and sharpen the second line in his paraphase of
Cet animal est très méchant,
Quand on l’attaque il se défend.
I propose (echoing a phrase from Edmund Burke),
This animal is very wicked,
It bites the foot that tries to kick it.
