To the Editors:
Who ever told Karl Miller (“The Auden Generation,” NYR, June 9) that Auden “was heard in conversation approving of the American contribution to the war in Vietnam” directly contradicts my own experience. I speak as one who was an intimate friend of Wystan Auden. I should like Mr. Miller and your readers to be informed that Auden detested the war in Vietnam and Americans who supported such a degrading blood-bath.

I had been plainly told this some while ago, and I checked at the time of writing that this was what I had been told. I am grateful to Mr. Myers for giving his view of the matter.
