In response to:
Ghosts in the House from the October 21, 1999 issue
To the Editors:
It has been brought to my attention by Luis Fernández-Galiano, director of the Spanish architecture magazine Arquitectura Viva, that contrary to what I wrote in my piece on Frank Gehry [NYR, October 21], the architects who designed the Bilbao concert hall are not Basque, but are in fact based in Madrid. Indeed, according to Señor Fernández-Galiano, they won the competition for the commission because their anonymous entry was assumed by the jury to be that of the French architect Jean Nouvel, and thus was the very opposite of an attempt to placate local critics of Bilbao’s roster of international stars. I am indebted to him for this information.
