In the June 11 issue, in Helen Epstein’s review of Sunny Schwartz’s Dreams from the Monster Factory, the psychiatrists James Gilligan and Bandy Lee found that among those who took the sixteen-week course of the Resolve to Stop the Violence Project, there was an 80 percent reduction in “violent rearrest,” not overall recidivism, which was also reduced but less significantly. And it was Suzanne Retzinger, not Thomas Scheff, who did a study finding that aggression was almost always linked to shame.
