In response to:
Night from the January 14, 2010 issue
To the Editors:
I should like to express my gratitude to readers of The New York Review who were kind enough to respond to my recent essay [“Night,” NYR, January 14]. It would have given me great pleasure to reply to every letter, but the truth is that I have received so many that I could not begin to address every one.
In particular, I am grateful for the many practical suggestions and offers of assistance. My thanks as well to those who gently reminded me that—in contrast with ALS and Parkinson’s disease—multiple sclerosis is not a degenerative neuromuscular disorder but an immune-based disease; not that this makes very much difference to its victims, though it has some bearing upon our chances of curing it.
