To the Editors:

The sixteenth annual Irving Howe Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Leon Wieseltier at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, October 25, in the Skylight Room of the CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue (at 34th Street). The title is “Steady Work: The Unmessianic Nature of Jewish Messianism.” Leon Wieseltier is the literary editor of The New Republic, a frequent columnist and essayist, and the author of Kaddish and other works. Sponsored by the Center for the Humanities, these lectures honor the late critic, editor, and political writer Irving Howe (1920–1993), who taught at the City University of New York from 1963 to 1986. They are made possible by a generous gift from the late Mr. Max Palevsky and are free and open to the public. For additional information please call (212) 817-2005 or consult the website of the Center for the Humanities, centerforthehumanities.org.
